Little Songs for Big Words

Opera Ignite, in partnership with Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, produced the “Little Songs for Big Words” CD designed to introduce selected vocabulary words to children ages 0-5 and their families. The CD was produced in support of the Buzzword Pittsburgh program, which is an initiative of PNC Grow Up Great dedicated to encouraging low-income families to use rich vocabulary in conversation with their young children. “My kids won’t let me take this CD out of my car.” – Parent

“My 4-year old loves the Metamorphosis song. He keeps asking which animals change completely. We’ve had some great conversations!” – Parent

The Little Barnyard Opera

This 30-minute interactive performance invites young children to explore the basic elements of music (loud/quiet, high/low, long/short) by singing along with barnyard animals. Familiar nursery rhymes are incorporated into the performance as well as dancing and instruments! The Little Barnyard Opera has been performed in over 75 classrooms, The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, The Three Rivers Arts Festival and various community events.

“The children were captivated the whole time and we’ve been singing ever since! Our whole school day is an opera now.” – Ms. Julie, preschool teacher

As part of “An Opera is a Story” preschool-residency program, Opera Ignite adapts famous operas to incorporate age-appropriate themes. At the conclusion of the residency, each child receives a take-home CD with musical excerpts and a narration of the adapted story. At selected sites, families are invited to a 40-minute reduced performance by professional musicians. Opera Ignite prepares the script, modifies the translations and directs the performance to maximize accessibility and audience interaction. Past operas have include Carmen, The Barber of Seville, The Merry Widow and Hansel and Gretel.

“The opera was wonderful. What a great way to end the school year! My daughter never used to tell me anything about her day, but she always tells me when the people from the opera come and then she teaches me the songs she learned that day.  Thank you so much!”  – Ron Stein, parent
